Wichita second grader proving that even a dollar can go a long way

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A 7-year-old Wichita girl turned a single dollar into more than $200 by baking and selling cookies to benefit the Wichita Police and Fire Foundation.

Madilyn Zimmerman, a second-grade student, took part in a classroom assignment that challenged students to either donate a dollar or “make the dollar grow.” Madilyn chose to make it grow and sold homemade cookies to raise money in memory of her “Poppy,” Tim Rabe, a volunteer firefighter in Bucklin for more than 30 years.

“Because my Poppy was a firefighter and he loved to fish,” she said.

Madilyn’s parents said they were surprised by how quickly the project expanded. She has raised about $200 so far, not including cookie orders that were still being delivered, her family said…
