Wichita veteran guarded nuclear weapons in Germany

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – One Kansas veteran served a brief stint in Vietnam before being shipped to Germany to guard nuclear weapons.

“I’m an Eagle Scout. I served my country. I just always knew I would,” U.S. Army Veteran David Boothe said.

The Wichita native joined the army in 1975, and after training to be in the infantry, he was sent to Saigon, but was only there for two weeks before being told he was headed to Germany.

“I had already heard so many bad stories. When they told me that, it was like, ‘Woo-hoo!’” he said.

Boothe says he was assigned to an unnamed nato site where he and his fellow soldiers spent their days guarding nuclear weapons. The responsibility that came with watching over weapons of mass destruction was not lost on him…
