Storm Track 3 Forecast: Strong winds approach tomorrow night, high fire danger

Another unseasonably warm day is in play for the Plains. With a few clouds passing through, there was still enough sunshine to make it feel fabulous with highs in the 50s and 60s. Several spots in western Kansas even hit the 70s this afternoon!

As temps cool overnight with lighter winds, some fog may form, especially over Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma. This could greatly impact Sumner, Cowley, Elk and Chautauqua counties in Kansas and Kay County in Oklahoma.

Overnight lows will be in the upper 20s to the lower 30s.

More warmth is on the table for Wednesday with highs from the 50s to the 60s. Western Kansas will continue to hit higher temperatures by afternoon.

Wednesday night, a cold front approaches. There is not much moisture available. That said, a sprinkle or shower may form north of I-70 and along/east of I-135 through Thursday morning.

The bigger story will be the gusty winds. Winds will increase once the flip from the northwest occurs. Gusts from 35-45 MPH will become widespread. Isolated gusts above 50 MPH are on the table.

High Wind Watches have been issued for most of northwest Kansas from 6 AM to 6 PM Thursday as gusts arrive with the passing boundary.

Fire concerns are elevated on Thursday, although the cooler temperatures in the 40s and 50s may reduce this possibility somewhat. Fire Weather Watches are in place for a large portion of central Kansas through 6 PM Thursday.

Temps will rebound Friday and Saturday to the 50s and 60s before another cold front arrives. This looks to be a dry run through Kansas with a slight cooldown closer to average for Sunday.

Next week, holiday travel looks good for the Plains. Temperatures will be able to stay warm, offering up highs in the 50s and 60s. Rain and snow chances look nonexistent for us, with such a mild and dry pattern in place.
