Sedgwick County Zoo mourns death of its firstborn chimpanzee

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Sedgwick County Zoo on Friday announced the death of one of its “beloved” chimpanzees, Mwana.

Mwana was born on Oct. 28, 1984, and was the first chimpanzee to be born at the zoo.

In a Facebook post, the zoo described Mwana as “a playful, caring presence — always eager to invite others to play and the first to welcome new family members.”

Due to various age-related health complications, the zoo said it decided to humanely euthanize him to prevent further suffering.

“He will be remembered as laid back, affectionate, and endlessly curious,” the zoo said. “Mwana touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”…
