Tanganyika Wildlife Park loses three sloths to kidney disease, concerning trend

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Tanganyika Wildlife Park has lost three of its four sloths to chronic kidney disease, part of what officials say is a concerning trend affecting zoos across the country.

The Goddard zoo housed four sloths named Sidney, Oscar, Molasses and Chewie. Only Sidney remains alive.

“It’s like losing a kid for many of us, like, that is how close we are to these animals. It’s like when you lose a pet at home,” said LynnLee Schmidt, chief operating officer at Tanganyika Park.

Nationwide pattern emerges
