After 14 years, Salina man sentenced in murder of girlfriend

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A 54-year-old Salina man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for a murder that took place more than 14 years ago.

After denying a series of post-trial motions, a judge sentenced Steven Couch Jr. to serve life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.

He was convicted of first-degree murder in the 2011 death of his girlfriend, 39-year-old Carol Williams. She was shot in the head at their home in New Cambria.

Couch was originally arrested and charged shortly after the shooting, but the charges were later dropped.

According to the attorney general’s office, in 2016, while Couch was serving a federal prison sentence, he confessed to the crime to a cellmate. The cellmate later contacted law enforcement, prompting the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to reopen the case…
