Train museum just shy of $50,000 restoration goal

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Wichita Great Plains Transportation Museum says it is close to its goal of raising $50,000.

The museum is currently working on the restoration of Santa Fe locomotive 93. The new funding is to repair damage that was recently uncovered when the train engine was grit blasted down to bare metal at Mid-America Car in Kansas City, Missouri.

The grit blasting revealed significant rust and other damage hidden by filler materials and paint. The museum says they received multiple large donations ranging from $5,000 to $11,000, in addition to many donations of smaller amounts.

“We are delighted with the support GPTM has received from so many donors in Wichita, throughout Kansas and from other regions of the U.S.,” said Heather Gatton, GPTM president, in a news release. “It is especially heartening to have people who believe in what we are doing step up during the holiday season, and it is truly appreciated. We are looking forward to work on 93 continuing until it is finished in 2026 and we can proudly display it in its fresh paint.”…
