Investigation complete in death of Hays officer. Here’s the full timeline

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Ellis County Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that the investigation into the death of Hays Police Sgt. Scott Heimann is finished.

County Attorney Aaron Cunningham said the Kansas Bureau of Investigation completed its investigation on Dec. 12.

The shooting happened in the early hours of Sept. 28. The suspect, Zane Wickham, died by suicide after an hours-long standoff with law enforcement in which he fatally shot Heimann.

Cunningham said the KBI’s investigative report included over 100reports from various law enforcement agencies, photo evidence and multiple hours ofaudio and video. Based on that evidence, Cunningham said if Wickham were still alive, he would be facing charges of:

  • Capital murder
  • Attempted premeditated first-degree murder
  • Three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon
  • Aggravated burglary of an occupied dwelling
  • DUI
  • Aggravated criminal threat
  • Two counts of criminal threat
  • Two counts of felony interference with law enforcement
  • Criminal trespass
  • Criminal damage to property
  • Telephone harassment
  • Stalking

The Ellis County Attorney’s Office provided the following timeline of events:

Friday, Sept. 26

Wickham tried to contact an ex-girlfriend in “a harassing manner,” according to a press release.

Saturday, Sept. 27
