Old school, new start: Chester Lewis Academy students settle into former elementary school

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Students and staff from Wichita’s Chester Lewis Academy are getting comfortable in an unexpected new home: the recently reopened Cleaveland Traditional Magnet, now playfully nicknamed “Chet‑Land.”

The move came after inspectors found structural problems at Chester Lewis, a nearly 75-year-old original building.

It’s the first week of classes in the southwest side elementary building, and administrators say the transition has gone better than they feared. Teachers and students are adapting to a layout that’s quite different from their old building — but in some ways, it’s turned out to be a welcome change…
