WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Sedgwick County Zoo said Friday that a chimpanzee was recently injured and had to undergo surgery.
The zoo said 2-year-old Alizeti was injured during a scuffle with Moshi, her troop’s alpha male. It happened when she wouldn’t come out into the chimps’ shared space.

As a result, her toe had to be amputated, and she lost two teeth.
Surgeons from Wesley Medical Center and Advanced Orthopaedic Associates performed the procedure.
The zoo said that in chimpanzee society, togetherness is not just social — it’s a matter of safety — and that the alpha male’s primary role is to keep the troop safe, which requires him to be heavy-handed at times…
