‘Beet’ing extreme cold, ice and snow on Kansas highways with juice

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Some public works crews chose to pretreat roads with salt and brine in advance of Friday’s snowfall, while many others opted not to.

A select few are using different melting agents, such as Butler County which is using beet juice as part of its road treatment solution.

It was chosen because it has a lower freezing point than salt…
