‘Kind of mind boggling’: Questions linger after Newton teen rescued from drainage pipe on golf course

NEWTON, Kan. (KWCH) – Over the past couple days, there’s been one big question on the minds of people in Newton: How did a 15-year-old get stuck in a drainage pipe while sledding?

On Saturday, Newton Fire and EMS responded to the call from Sand Creek Station and posted a photo of the rescue on social media. The teen was sledding and wound up trapped in an uncovered drainage pipe on the closed golf course.

“With the snow covering the ground you definitely have to be aware of your surroundings because you can’t see what might be underneath the snow,” said Andy Harder, Newton Fire/EMS Division Chief of Community Risk Reduction. “Is it a frozen lake or is it an open drainage hole?”
