Wichita police warn of scammers impersonating officers, demanding payments

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Wichita Police Department is warning residents about scammers impersonating police officers and demanding money for fake warrants or department donations.

The department said Chief Joe Sullivan and other WPD members will never contact residents to request donations for officers or the department. Police also will not call, text or email residents demanding payment for warrants or threatening jail if payment is not made.

How to protect yourself

Police advise residents who receive suspicious calls to take the following steps:

  • Hang up immediately
  • Do not provide personal or financial information
  • Do not send money
