‘Nobody’s ever prepared for a call like that’: 911 director recalls Hesston shooting

HESSTON, Kan. (KSNW) — When disaster strikes, the ones who hear about it first are those on the phone.

Don Gruver, Harvey County’s director of emergency communications, remembers the day of the Excel Industries shooting in Hesston like it was yesterday.

“It’s hard to imagine it was 10 years ago,” Gruver said Wednesday, the anniversary of the tragedy. “But you still remember sights, sounds. It’s all still up there.”
