WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Wichita Public Schools buses have had cameras for years, but this school year the bus company First Student is upgrading to an AI-powered system called Samsara — and at least one driver has concerns about where the footage goes.
Bus driver Kent Myrtle said the key difference between the old and new systems is how footage is stored. The previous system kept recordings on the bus itself. The new Samsara system sends footage to a cloud through Amazon Web Services.
“With the traditional First Student camera system, to have a leak of the data and the footage, somebody would have to physically steal the secured footage bus by bus,” Myrtle said. “With Samsara, there is a possibility of technical vulnerability and the opportunity for human error at every level.”…
