Survey shows housing pressure — and competing views on how Delaware should respond

Preliminary DSHA survey finds broad concern about affordability, supply, and homelessness, but policy solutions may divide conservatives and progressives

DOVER — Delawareans broadly agree that the state has a housing problem. The harder question is what government should do about it.

Preliminary survey results released by the Delaware State Housing Authority and the University of Delaware’s Center for Applied Demography & Survey Research found that residents are worried about housing affordability, limited supply and whether young people will be able to remain in their communities.

The survey of roughly 400 Delaware residents found that 73% believe their communities have not invested enough in affordable housing. Large majorities said there is not enough housing for people with low incomes, smaller households, and older adults looking to downsize.
