Juneteenth has been officially recognized in the City of Wilmington with a proclamation issued by Mayor John Carney and the raising of the Juneteenth flag over Rodney Square.
“Whereas Juneteenth inspires all residents to engage in meaningful dialogue, promote understanding, and work together to build a more inclusive, equitable and united Wilmington for future generations, be it hereby known to all that I, John Carney, Mayor of the City of Wilmington, proclaim the 19th day of June 2026 as Juneteenth Day in the City of Wilmington and encourage all residents to join in recognizing this important day through reflection, education, celebration and community service,” Carney stated Thursday.
Juneteenth recognizes the significance of June 19th, 1865. Two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the final remaining slaves in Galveston, Texas were informed that they were now free.
