Electric safety, reliability and affordability get priority as summer begins

Delaware’s largest supplier of electricity is prepared to meet the heavy demand for power during the summer – and it’s highlighting ways for customers to keep their costs under control.

Recently at its Christiana area complex, Delmarva Power hosted safety demonstrations and discussed how it was getting ready to deal with the risks of summer: storms, downed trees and power lines, as well as fast-growing vegetation.

“We’re inspecting our lines, we’re making sure that our lines are clear of all vegetation that could be a risk,” Pepco Holdings Chief Operating Officer Rodney Oddoye said (Delmarva is part of Pepco). “We’re looking at equipment to make sure that we proactively inspect all equipment, certainly making sure that our grid is resilient as we head into the storm season is of utmost importance.”

One project that Delmarva highlighted has involved modernizing more than 4.5-miles of transmission lines between the Silverside and Naamans substations.

Also, efforts to help electric customers afford their bills go on the road. Delmarva is bringing its Mobile Customer Assistance van to various community events. Representatives will meet with customers and be equipped to help them understand their bills and accounts, make payment arrangements, get on budget billing, and find out about available assistance and referrals…
