Newark proposal would require electric vehicle charging infrastructure in all new construction

The City of Newark is considering new rules that would require new residential and commercial buildings to be built with electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

“It’s been predicted that by 2040, EVs will outnumber traditional combustion engine vehicles,” Planning Director Renee Bensley said. “There are obviously some subsidies and things that have changed in recent years that have slowed adoption a little bit, but there are still a fair number of folks who need that charging infrastructure to be able to keep their vehicles going.”

The proposed ordinance would mirror state law for residential properties, and the city will add requirements for commercial properties as well. The idea is to “make it easier and more convenient to own an EV in Delaware,” Bensley said…
