The City of Wilmington has named its first Director of Community Safety.
The newly-created office will be led by John Cook, the former Executive Director of Delaware’s Group Violence Intervention Initiative. The office was created and budgeted for this year, intended to strengthen the City’s holistic, proactive, and community-based approach to public safety and policing.
“John Cook has years of on-the-ground experience serving Wilmington communities through group violence prevention work,” Wilmington Mayor John Carney said. “His leadership and insight will be critical in effectively bringing together community partners and first responders, and in sustaining our whole-city approach to public safety.”
Cook has experience in community safety, behavioral health, human services, housing stabilization and violence prevention. He is former Executive Director of Delaware’s Group Violence Intervention Initiative.
