The first phase of work to shore up the deteriorating South Market Street Bridge is nearing an end.
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) gave an update on the status of the nearly 90-year old span, which is also referred to as the South Walnut Street Bridge, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Shoring towers have been installed to carry the load of the pier columns, said DelDOT bridge engineer Jon Moore. The towers will also be used as a platform while repairs are made to the columns, which could also result in demolition of those piers.
