In honor of the Year of the International Women Farmer, the spotlight is turning to the women who keep Delaware’s farms running — through hard work, smart leadership, and a deep commitment to family and community.
Three women, one from each of Delaware’s counties, were recently featured for their contributions to agriculture: Laura Brittingham of Brittingham Farms in Sussex County, Jenny Dittmar of Dittmar Farms in Kent County, and Cindy Filasky of Filasky’s Produce in New Castle County. Each shared her personal journey, her role on the farm, her hopes for the future of agriculture, and her connection to Delaware Farm Bureau.
Laura Brittingham’s path to lavender farming was born out of necessity. Brittingham Farms has long-standing roots in traditional agriculture, but lavender was never part of the original vision. After years of dealing with deer damaging crops, Laura began researching natural deterrents and landed on lavender as the answer.
