Arrest made in 2012, cold case killing of Delaware student, Appoquinimink High graduate

An arrest has been made in the 11-year-old cold case killing of a University of Delaware student and Appoquinimink High School graduate.

Twenty-year-old Peter Di Sabatino was fatally shot outside his apartment at Studio Green Apartments near Newark in November 2012. Earlier this month, a man was charged with murder for his killing, and police arrested him in recent days.

Previously unreported court records also indicate that another man had been charged with Di Sabatino’s murder but prosecutors dropped the charges against that man on the eve of his trial last month.

Here’s what we know about the cases and detectives’ theory of motive:

The murder

Di Sabatino graduated from Appoquinimink High School in 2011. His family and friends remembered him as a standout lacrosse player.

In 2012, he was attending the University of Delaware’s Associate in Arts program when he was killed outside his apartment at Studio Green Apartments near Newark. For years, detectives were unable to identify a suspect.

“You never really know how the system works until you are in it,” said Thomas Di Sabatino, Peter’s father. “It takes time.”
