Nearly a dozen NJ towns scrap private trash pickup for shared collection service

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Nearly a dozen towns in Gloucester and Salem counties have ditched private trash collection companies for shared services as a way to reduce costs.

The shared trash pickup services are run through the Logan Township Department of Public Works in Gloucester County. Mayor Frank Minor said the idea started more than a decade ago, with one goal in mind: to provide the service while saving the taxpayers money.

“Some of the medium-sized towns are saving over $250,000 annually,” he said. “Our challenge is to come up with creative ideas to continue to provide outstanding service to our residents.”

Quinton Township is the latest town added to the shared services group, joining Woodbury Heights, Wenonah, East Greenwich, Swedesboro, Elk, Harrison Township, South Harrison, Woodstown and Woolwich.

“Working with these towns and mayors and with their professionals has just been a wonderful experience,” said Minor.

He said they’d be happy to add more towns to their pickup map if there’s an opportunity. He also welcomes further discussions on other shared services in policing, education or anything else that makes sense.
