DOVER — Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long will be sworn in as Delaware’s next governor on Tuesday and fill a two-week interim term as Gov. John Carney becomes the next mayor of Wilmington.
Lt. Gov. Hall-Long, a Democrat, is scheduled to be sworn in at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Old State House in Dover.
Gov. Carney plans to resign at noon Tuesday in advance of his swearing-in ceremony in the afternoon in Wilmington.
Gov-elect Matt Meyer, who defeated Lt. Gov. Hall-Long in a three-way Democratic primary for governor, will not be sworn in until Jan. 21, leaving a short gap between full gubernatorial terms.
Upon her swearing-in, Lt. Gov. Hall-Long will become the second woman to serve as governor in Delaware’s history.
Lt. Gov. Hall-Long’s gubernatorial term will leave the Senate without a lieutenant governor as presiding officer for one week since the General Assembly’s first day is Jan. 21. Lt. Gov-elect Kyle Evans Gay will be sworn in Jan. 21.
During the last General Assembly, President Pro Tempore Dave Sokola, D-Newark, and Sen. Stephanie Hansen, D-Middletown, filled in for Lt. Gov.Hall-Long when needed.
