The most vulnerable counties for tornadoes

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – The time of year to watch the skies is upon us. Some folks will look with panic in their eyes, some with excitement, but they will all be looking to see if a cloud takes a familiar cone shape that could mean trouble. Springtime does mean flowers and green lawns and all of the beauty that one usually thinks of, however, it also means that danger from the skies is a possibility.

Have you ever wondered if you live in a particularly bad area for tornadoes in comparison to other areas of the country? Thankfully, the fine folks at HomeGnome put together a study of the US Counties Most at Risk for Tornadoes . WI Proud represents the northern part of Tornado Alley and 5 of the counties in our coverage area rank out of the 946 counties in the study. La Crosse County ranks the highest, coming in at #414.

The study takes things like incident, financial and structural risks (as well as other data) into account. After it was all tallied, Cook County, Illinois, was named the most at-risk. Being home to Chicago, being on Lake Michigan and the second highest incidental risk will land you in the top spot. On the other end of the spectrum is Gloucester County, New Jersey.
