Troopers Update Fatal Accident That Closed Route 40

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred this morning in Newark that left one man dead.

Officials said on July 4, 2025, at approximately 5:07 a.m., a 2020 white Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling in the left westbound lane of Pulaski Highway, approaching Biddle Avenue. At the same time, a pedestrian, whose vehicle was disabled on the right shoulder of westbound Pulaski Highway, was attempting to cross the westbound lanes from the shoulder. The pedestrian entered the Jeep’s path of travel as he attempted to cross the dark roadway and was struck police said.

The pedestrian, an 89-year-old man from New Castle, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld until his family and relatives are notified…
