Delaware lawmakers working on range of bills to address property tax hikes ahead of Aug. 12 special session

DOVER— Ahead of the General Assembly’s Aug. 12 special session, state lawmakers are working on several different proposals to address stark increases in residents’ property tax bills following each county’s first reassessment cycle in decades.

Each Delaware county reassessed their residential and commercial properties following a 2020 Court of Chancery ruling, but as updated property tax bills hit mailboxes last month, residents — largely in New Castle County — had their costs spike, with bills even doubling in some cases.

Prior to that ensuing reassessment cycle, New Castle County had not completed property reassessment since 1983; Kent County had not since 1987; and Sussex was the most out of date, with reassessment having not occurred since 1974…
