Church, school communities mourn popular Catholic priest’s recent passing

Heaven gained yet another angel on Aug. 1 when Rev. Stephen J. Baker, O.S.A. passed away at age 62. He is missed by many throughout Delaware County, where he grew up and served throughout much of his priestly vocation.

Born and raised in Glenolden, Baker attended St. George School, 22 E. Cooke Ave., Glenolden, and Monsignor Bonner High School, 403 N Lansdowne Ave., Drexel Hill, from where he graduated in 1981. He entered the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.) right after high school graduation and was ordained an Augustinian priest on Aug. 18, 1990, at Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Bryn Mawr.

After serving in several ministries in Massachusetts and New York, the cleric made his way back to the area where he grew up and was given the assignment of faculty member at Monsignor Bonner. Despite a battle with cancer shortly after returning to his alma mater, he continued his service at the school until 2005…
