Gov. Matt Meyer on Monday signed a bill that clears the way for Exceptional Care for Children to continue caring for its patients after they turn 21 to help them transition to adult care.
“This is a monumental step forward for the medically fragile young adults in our community and their families,” the nonprofit said in a statement. “For too long, families have faced the daunting challenge of finding appropriate care for their children once they ‘age out’ of pediatric facilities. This decision removes that barrier, providing a seamless transition from pediatric to adult services for residents with severe medical complexities, all within the home they know and trust.”
Founded in 2006, ECC is a pediatric skilled nursing facility that can house up to 46 kids. Most patients are technology-dependent and rely on a ventilator, breathing tube, feeding tube or other devices to survive. Patients need medical care that exceeds what their parents can provide at home but no longer qualify for care in an acute care hospital.
