Scooter Rider Trapped Under Vehicle Wednesday

WILMINGTON, Del. — A serious traffic collision in New Castle County left a scooter rider critically injured after he was struck and trapped under a sedan on South Maryland Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

According to Lieutenant Abigail Haas, Public Information Officer for New Castle County Paramedics, the incident occurred at about 3:15 p.m. in the 600 block of South Maryland Avenue, when a motorized scooter and a sedan collided. Several good Samaritans intervened before first responders arrived: they lifted the weight of the sedan with a jack, enabling rescuers to reach the victim.

First arrivals from the Five Points Fire Company and New Castle County Paramedics found the 59-year-old scooter rider beneath the vehicle. Fire department personnel extricated him, and paramedics worked on scene before transporting him in serious condition to Christiana Hospital in Stanton aboard an ambulance operated by Five Points.
