Driver charged with vehicular homicide following crash in Bear

A New Castle man is charged with vehicular homicide and traffic offenses following a crash on Route 40 in Bear that claimed the life of a woman who was on a motorcycle.

According to Delaware State Police, 46-year-old Omar Mendoza was driving eastbound on Pulaski Highway near Fir Avenue Sunday morning at about 10:00, when he went through a stop sign at the cross-over and drove diagonally in the wrong direction. A westbound motorcycle hit the car, and its driver and passenger were thrown.

A 44-year-old New Castle woman who was a passenger on the motorcycle died at the scene. A 36-year-old Bear man who was operating the motorcycle was hospitalized and is expected to survive.

Mendoza also needed hospital treatment. Then, he was taken to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
