Newark considering property tax increases, warns bigger financial issues loom

Newark residents may soon face increased property tax and utility rates to balance next year’s budget, but the future is looking even murkier.

Newark City Council told city staff at a recent meeting they would approve a 12% water race increase, along with 8% on sewer rates for FY 2026.

They also gave direction to City Manager Tom Coleman who put together a plan that would raise property taxes by 3.3%, or the 12-month Consumer Price Index, on top of the recent reassessment-based property tax increases a majority of Newark residents are currently trying to afford…
