As of October 2025, the government shutdown has left the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) without funding. SNAP benefits are expected to end on December 1. More than 40 million Americans use SNAP to buy groceries. Many families in the Delaware Valley are now turning to local food banks for help.
In Pennsylvania, several organizations are offering food assistance. These include Feast of Justice and Friends Community Pantry & Fridge in Philadelphia. The Mitzvah Food Program and Philabundance also have multiple locations in Greater Philadelphia. Vivian’s Cupboard Food Bank at the Mazzoni Center is another resource in the city.
In Delaware, residents can visit the Claymont Community Market and Garden, the Delaware Regional Dream Center in Newark, and the Food Bank of Delaware in Newark and Milford.
