Mayor Carney: Wilmington gets influx of out-of-town people in need of shelter

Wilmington is taking several steps to address the rising number of people who face homelessness.

But, Mayor John Carney said recently that the city also gets a constant influx of people from other cities and towns in need of services. He cited recent reports of the City of Philadelphia paying for $270,000 worth of one-way bus tickets.

“People know around the area, around the region that Wilmington is a compassionate and caring place,” Carney said. “As a result, our city has somehow become attractive for unhoused populations from other locations nearby.”…
