The proposed closure of a Level 4 correctional facility in Wilmington continues to draw opposition.
The Delaware Department of Correction recently announced a plan to close down the Plummer Community Corrections Center. At a community meeting it was stated that re-entry is a lot different from a few decades ago, and the population at the facility is well below capacity. Offenders would be transferred to other facilities in Kent and Sussex Counties. The building is also aging and in need of an estimated $4-million worth of maintenance and repairs.
Tuesday, Councilwoman Shané Darby gathered with several offenders outside of the Plummer Center.
“We are demanding a pause in all transfers immediately and return of any Wilmington residents who have already been moved,” Darby said. “Governor Matt Meyer, he needs to come to the Plummer Center, do a tour and talk not just to leadership, but he needs to talk to the actual staff who are working with these residents day to day.”…
