The former Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 1408 West 2nd St. in Chester, was destroyed by fire last week.
Chester firefighters were called to the scene at about 6 a.m. and upon arrival encountered flames and heavy smoke pouring from the historic structure.
Chester Mayor Stefan Roots, who attended Immaculate Heart of Mary School from sixth to eighth grade, was on the scene and said watching the church burn made him feel sad. “The church was the most magnificent space I had ever seen back then,” Roots wrote on social media. “Tall ceilings, woodwork, marble, Stations of the Cross, and a huge marble altar with the image of The Last Supper carved in front. I have great memories of this place.”…
