Burglary suspect charged with trying to flee arrest in stolen vehicle

A Wilmington man is behind bars after being arrested in an allegedly-stolen vehicle, while under suspicion of burglary.

New Castle County Police said an officer attempted to stop the driver Sunday afternoon near Maryland Avenue, but the driver took off at a high rate of speed. The pursuit was discontinued due to safety concerns in a residential area.

The car was found abandoned at West Second Street and North Union Street. According to police, 43-year-old David Smith was seen by a state trooper on South Union Street and was taken into custody. Police said Smith was wanted in connection with a business burglary in early December, during which cash and more than 30 cartons of cigarettes were stolen.
