History also made in Darby Borough with new young mayor

The youngest man and first African to be elected mayor of Darby Borough took his oath of office on Monday evening (Jan. 5) before a room of supporters and “extended family who traveled from 10 different states to be here.”

Joar Dahn, 28, a Liberian American, promised to transform government on behalf of the borough’s workingclass residents. Dahn, a Democrat, was sworn inside a crowded room at the Darby Borough Administration Building. He placed his hand on the Bible, took his oath as administered by Magisterial District Judge Tammi L. Forbes, and became Darby’s first African mayor in the borough’s 340-year history.

Addressing the crowd Dahn first thanked “everybody for being here,” including his family, borough police officers and his parents. He said his extended family “all flew here to witness history. Right now, I’m overwhelmed, I just want to say thank you. I’m so humble and so blessed. I want to thank you, Lord, for this victory.”

Dahn acknowledged the task ahead saying he knows he has a lot of work to do. He promised to put as much energy into his work and make many changes in the small community of about 10,000 residents…
