Traffic Stop Leads To Gun And Drug Charges

Detectives with the New Castle County Police arrested a Wilmington man Tuesday afternoon following a traffic stop. Officials said the stop led to the discovery of a loaded handgun and a large quantity of marijuana.

Police said the incident occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on January 6, 2026, while detectives assigned to the Active Crime Trends Team were conducting proactive patrols in the area of Lancaster Avenue. Detectives conducted a traffic stop on a teal Nissan Versa near the intersection of Lancaster Avenue and Cleveland Avenue for a traffic violation.

Police said detectives developed probable cause to search the vehicle, during which they recovered a loaded 9mm handgun and more than 200 grams of marijuana. Authorities reported that the firearm, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were concealed inside the vehicle.

Further investigation determined that the driver, identified as 23-year-old Taiswan Gibbs of Wilmington, is prohibited from possessing a firearm, police said…
