Newark police officer resigns amid investigation of his ‘dishonest conduct’

A Newark Police Department officer resigned last fall amid an investigation into his alleged dishonest conduct, the department disclosed this month.

Joseph McCreary was still going through field training when NPD learned that he had falsified information and omitted details during his application and background process. The department launched an investigation, and McCreary ultimately resigned before the investigation was complete.

“The Newark Police Department maintains high standards in both its hiring practices and the conduct of its officers. Once the department became aware of this matter, the officer was immediately placed on administrative leave for the duration of the internal investigation,” Chief Mark Farrall said in a prepared statement. “We hold our officers to the highest standards of professionalism, conduct and ethics. Any allegation of dishonest conduct is thoroughly investigated by the department’s Professional Standards Office, and sustained findings of misconduct are not tolerated.”…
