Delaware Relaunches Grocery Initiative With $700K — Supporters See Access, Critics See Yet Another Attempt to Solve an Old Problem

WILMINGTON, Del. (Feb. 20, 2026) — Delaware officials this week reopened the state’s Grocery Initiative and First State Food System Program, offering $700,000 in grants aimed at expanding access to fresh food in low-income neighborhoods and areas at risk of becoming food deserts.

State leaders say the program will help stabilize small grocers, strengthen the local food supply chain and improve access to healthy food in underserved communities. Applications open Feb. 20 and close March 20, with awards expected in late April.
