Newark Installs First Traffic Camera

The City of Newark, in coordination with its vendor Elovate, has installed its first automated speed camera on Hillside Road. The installation follows the passage of both state and city legislation authorizing automated speed enforcement in response to ongoing concerns about speeding raised by residents and members of the Newark City Council.

The camera is now placed at Hillside Road between Sypherd Drive and West Main Street. The camera will begin tracking speed on March 24, 2026. During the first 30 days of operation, motorists traveling 11 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit will receive warning notices only. After the initial 30-day warning period, drivers who exceed the speed threshold will be issued civil speeding citations by mail.

Violations issued through the automated system are civil penalties. They do not add points to a driver’s license and will not impact insurance rates…
