Newark City Council rejects pursuing liquor store alcohol tax

The chance of a liquor tax in Newark has dried up after Newark City Council could not agree to ask state legislators for a charter change on Monday.

Newark was considering requesting state lawmakers change the city’s charter, allowing them the ability to issue up to a 3% tax on alcohol sold at liquor stores in the city, which would have been the first liquor store tax in Delaware.

The tax would not have applied to bars and restaurants, and even if Newark had passed Monday’s vote, it would have needed 2/3 votes in both the Delaware House and Senate, just for Newark to then be able to vote in a possible tax…
