City council on Monday agreed to rezone a property on South Chapel Street, clearing a path for a developer to build what could be one of the tallest student housing complexes in Newark.
Detailed plans for the development will have to come back to council for a final vote, but the rezoning increases the maximum allowable height from three stories to seven.
The project is proposed for a 2.5-acre site that encompasses seven separate parcels on South Chapel Street, Continental Avenue and Haines Street. Those properties currently contain a mix of rental houses, duplexes, small apartment buildings and a former fraternity house…
