Cops Say North Philly Coffee Shop Was Brewing More Than Lattes

State and federal law enforcement say a North Philadelphia coffee counter was serving up far more than caffeine. Seventeen people were arrested last week in a coordinated sweep that officials say took down a longrunning drug trafficking ring that quietly operated out of a small storefront on West Cumberland Street. Investigators allege the group used the neighborhood café as a front to sell and package cocaine, crack, fentanyl and other drugs, with raids stretching from the city to neighboring Delaware County and New Jersey and turning up weapons, drugs and cash, as per CBS Philadelphia.

Multi-agency Raids Targeted Coffee Shop Front

Attorney General Dave Sunday stood alongside local and federal partners at a news conference to lay out the case, saying investigators executed roughly 30 search warrants across North Philadelphia, Delaware County and New Jersey in a sweep last week. Authorities labeled the alleged narcotics network the “Louis Alexander Drug Trafficking Organization” and said it ran its operation out of Cumberland Coffee and Snacks at West Cumberland and North Cleveland streets. The bust and its details were outlined in the briefing and covered by CBS Philadelphia.

Officials Framed Operation As A Decadeslong Menace

The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office shared video and photos of the takedown on social media, calling the coordinated sweep a clear message that violence and illegal drugs will not be tolerated in city neighborhoods. The post publicly thanked the federal, state and local agencies that joined the effort and credited investigators with months of legwork that led to the arrests. The Sheriff’s clip includes street-level footage from the raids along with brief remarks from law enforcement leaders and is posted on the department’s Facebook.

What Investigators Seized

Searches tied to the investigation turned up thousands of dollars in cash, roughly four pounds of cocaine, fentanyl, marijuana and ecstasy pills, along with 27 firearms, according to officials. Investigators also reported finding evidence that drugs were cooked and packaged on the second floor of the building behind the café, suggesting the shop was only the public face of the operation. Agencies involved included the Pennsylvania State Police, Philadelphia Police, the ATF, DEA, FBI, Homeland Security Investigations and the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office, as described in the briefing and reporting by CBS Philadelphia.

Who Was Charged

Prosecutors say 17 people were swept up in the case, with Louis Alexander identified as the alleged ringleader. Officials noted that several defendants are older adults and that one suspect turned themselves in after learning about the warrants. Some of the people charged were already on parole or probation and will now face additional detainers for alleged violations tied to the new accusations.

Legal Implications

Authorities say the defendants are facing a slate of serious counts that include felony corrupt organizations, possession with intent to deliver and illegal possession of firearms. Alexander is being held on $750,000 bail. Local coverage and the attorney general’s briefing also listed the defendants by name and outlined the role each allegedly played in the enterprise, according to Glenside Local…
