NHCS budget proposal includes raises, bonuses for teachers and support staff

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Beginning teachers in New Hanover County could see a massive 17% jump in starting pay under a proposed school budget update set for discussion Tuesday.

The New Hanover County Schools Finance Capital Bond Committee will meet Aug. 11 to review the spending plan, which features an average 7.8% salary increase for teachers and instructional support staff. Under the proposal, starting pay for beginning teachers would rise from $41,000 to $48,000, with overall teacher raises ranging from 5% to 17.1% depending on years of experience.

Assistant principals would also see an average 7.8% raise through step and schedule increases aligned with teachers, while principals and all other district employees would receive a 3% salary bump…
