Josh Pate has been careful to describe the Outer Banks prequel as a script rather than a show. “We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix,” he told Deadline, which is the phrasing of a writer who does not yet have an episode order. Netflix has not commented publicly. The working title circulating for it, Kildare, is not official.
What is settled is the shape. The story runs roughly twenty years before the original, and Pate framed it as the story of “the parents’ generation,” tracking how one island sorted itself into Figure Eight and The Cut. His brother Jonas and Shannon Burke are developing it with him, and Jonas has been open about wanting to shoot it in Wilmington, which would make it the first project in this franchise filmed in the state the show is named after. The original series shot in South Carolina, and the final season decamped to Dubrovnik.
That plan is now running into arithmetic.
North Carolina’s Grant Is Spoken For Until 2029
The North Carolina Film and Entertainment Grant puts $31 million a year on the table and caps total disbursement at that same figure.
