From the polls to stickers, how Brunswick students are getting involved this election year

When Brunswick County residents cast their ballots in the presidential election this November, they won’t receive the traditional election day sticker declaring the words “I Voted” and donned with an American flag.

This year, the sticker that will be handed out will be unique to Brunswick County and designed by a local student. For the first time, the county is holding a sticker design contest where area students will submit their hand-drawn designs for the “I Voted” and “Future Voter” stickers that will be passed out to voters and children on Election Day, Nov. 5.

It’s the latest in a few efforts to get younger people to learn about the election process, from simulated elections to working at the polls.

Sara Lavere, director of elections for Brunswick County, said a sticker design contest has been a long time coming in the county.

“We have talked about [the sticker contest] internally for a long time because we see other counties in North Carolina doing it and other jurisdictions across the country doing these great sticker contests and recognizing students that turn in their artwork and try to win and we just think it’s so neat,” Lavere said.
