Emerald Isle assistant fire chief returns home after being shot

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Emerald Isle assistant fire chief who was found shot at his home back in December returned home Friday after an extended hospital stay in Wilmington.

Emerald Isle Fire Chief W.C. Matthias II said Don Askew returned home with an escort of fire trucks and other town vehicles leading the way. He had been at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington since Dec. 27, when he was found shot in his yard.

Officials at the time said there was no foul play and no threat to the public.

At the time of the shooting, Askew was transported to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, where he had surgery before being flown to Novant Health New Hanover.
